The Weekly Times of July 18, 2012 has an article called "Glenrowan's Ned Kelly Centre Proposal."
It begins with:
"The $8 million project, which includes $2 million for digital equipment to share the Kelly Gang's story, will be taken to tourism stakeholders to offer input after gaining approval from Wangaratta councillors."
Later in the article there is this:
". . . there's been refinement of the centre and this concept is a series of smaller buildings keeping with the feel of the town," Ms Keith said.
She said the changes made the centre's concept move from a "museum-type building to an interactive centre".
Within the first year she said a conservative estimate was for 60,000 people to visit the centre..."

ReplyDeleteIf the NK Centre does go ahead,I really,really hope that it won't be built near the siege site.I think it would ruin the whole feel of the area if such a place was on the actual site.It would be far better to have it on the other side of the railway track.I would hate to see Glenrowan turned into a complete theme park.It is too special a place & is already built up enough around the actual siege area.
Hi, Lisa, I just found this info in the Wangaratta Chronicle:
ReplyDelete"...The plan involves building a centre in the park adjacent to the railway line in the centre of the town.
A cafe and several buildings would be part of the centre, which would feature both free and paid areas.
Central to the plan would be a "Conversation Gallery" where valuable display items and touring exhibitions would be on display.
The site would also have a number of real and figurative trees (poles) leading visitors on paths between key sites.
Computers would be key to the experience, with visitors able to access a "digital hub", which would be a database and search engine with information specific to Ned Kelly.
Other significant sites relevant to the Kelly legend would also be incorporated into the design, with plans to build a timber cut out of the Ann Jones Inn at the siege site...."

Thanks Sharon,that is very interesting.I must admit that I would prefer it to be just a really great,informative (old fashioned type) museum about the boys & not so 'computerised'.I kind of think the idea sounds a little over the top in a way & risks turning Glenrowan into a completely over crowded (both building wise & people wise)place.
ReplyDeleteP.S.As for yet another cafe,Glenrowan could well do without it,especially if it will be anything like the current disgusting 'cafe' which should be closed immediately and which should definitely not be allowed to include the Kelly name on their dump of a place.Revolting to say the least.
